Description
The Experience Discover the beauty and tranquility of the Pyrenees in winter on a snowshoeing one day route through the Aigüestortes National Park, located in the Spanish Pyrenees. Starting from Les Planes de Son, we follow a quieter and less-visited route into the mountains, away from some of the more popular and crowded access points of the national park. Along the way, you’ll learn how to use snowshoes, walk through snow-covered pin and fir forests and open mountain landscapes, and look for animal tracks in the snow. The route takes us to the Pla de la Font mountain hut, at 2,105 metres, where we stop for a picnic surrounded by wonderful views of the Pyrenees mountains. The landscape around Les Planes de Son also tells a story. We’ll explore the area's glacial origins and the traces of glacial erosion, while learning about the traditional ways people have used and managed these mountain landscapes over generations. Who It's For? The route offers a great balance between a beginner-friendly introduction to snowshoeing and a moderate physical challenge. No previous snowshoeing experience is necessary, but participants should be in good physical condition and comfortable walking for around five hours in the mountains. The route has a low technical difficulty, while the 10 km distance and 500 metres of elevation gain provide a moderate physical challenge.

Itinerary

At 9:00 AM we meet at Moeve petrol Station and drive to Son, a small village situated 10km from the meeting point.
We begin the activity at the car park of the Món Natura Pirineus environmental interpretation centre at the end of the road from Son village. I'll fit you with snowshoes and teach you the basic technique before we set out.
From Les Planes de Son, we ascend through plateaus, ravines and black pine forests until we arrive to the Pla de la Font mountain hut at 2,105 meters for a picnic lunch. We'll point out animal tracks and glacial features along the way.
After lunch, we will retrace part of or route and descend through the Bosc Negre forest back to Les Planes de Son. The approximate arrival time is 4:30 PM.
