Description

I grew up in the northern reserves, but the Sierra de Guadarrama still surprises me with how quickly you leave the noise behind. We start at Area Recreativa La Panera and climb through pine forest that smells sharp and clean. The trail is moderate, gaining 700 meters over the day, and the group sets the pace together. As we gain altitude, the forest opens into alpine meadows where you'll find seasonal wildflowers depending on when we go. The Mujer Muerta ridge comes into view, a line of granite peaks named for the silhouette they form along the horizon. The geology here is old, worn smooth in some places and jagged in others, and it marks the boundary between Madrid and Segovia provinces. We cross mountain passes where the views stretch in both directions. The biodiversity is strong in this part of the Central System: pine groves, scrubland clearings, and enough bird and mammal activity that we often stop to watch. The descent follows the same route back through the forest, and we finish where we started. It's a full day that lets you move at a steady pace and take in what's around you.
