This is a day away from screens, traffic, and the usual demands. We start in San Sebastián and head west along cliff paths where the layered flysch formations drop into the sea. The rock here acts as an open geology textbook, showing the Cretaceous-Paleogene boundary in horizontal stripes you can touch. Each layer holds a chapter of deep time, and I'll walk you through what happened when these sediments settled on ancient ocean floors. We'll walk sections between Zumaia and Deba, moving between exposed coastal trails and quieter forest paths inland. The terrain shifts from rocky headlands to singletrack through oak and pine, then back to open views where you can watch waves work against sediment that's been building since the age of dinosaurs. The route gives you space to think, to notice, and to step out of your usual rhythm. We gain 650 meters over the day, enough to feel it but not so much that the geology becomes secondary to the effort. The route keeps you engaged without demanding technical skill. Wear sturdy boots that handle wet rock, bring layers for coastal wind shifts, and pack water and something to eat mid-route.

  1. Coastal geology walk from San Sebastián - We leave San Sebastián and follow the coast west toward Zumaia, where the flysch formations start showing their full character.
