Tour Details

Description

The Grande Traversata del Gennargentu is a three-day wilderness trek across the highest and most remote mountain range in Sardinia. It is a journey through wide open landscapes, ancient forests, high plateaus and mountain ridges, far from roads, villages and the usual tourist routes. Starting near the mountain village of Aritzo, the route crosses the heart of the Gennargentu and reaches some of Sardinia’s highest mountains before ending at Arcu Correboi pass. Along the way, you will cross rocky trails, forest paths, open mountain grasslands, long ridges and mountain passes. Each day takes you deeper into a landscape where traces of traditional pastoral life are often the only signs of human presence. There are no mountain huts or accommodation facilities along the route. Nights are spent in simple wilderness camps, surrounded by the remote mountain landscape. The trek can be undertaken carrying all your personal equipment, or logistical support can be arranged to reduce the weight of your backpack. The GTG is designed for experienced hikers who are comfortable with long days on the trail and are looking for more than a series of day hikes: a true mountain crossing and three days of immersion in the wild heart of Sardinia.

Tour Highlights

Itinerary

  1. Into the Gennargentu -

Starting from Santa Maria della Neve, we enter the Gennargentu through forests and gentle mountain landscapes before climbing towards Funtana Cugnada. The route then follows broad, rounded ridges and less travelled paths, gradually revealing the wild character of the mountains. After crossing valleys, streams and woodland, we reach the remote area of Pranu ’e Girgini, where we set up our first wilderness camp.

  2. The High Ridges of Gennargentu -

The longest and most demanding day of the crossing takes us from the limestone landscapes of Girgini towards the highest mountains in Sardinia. We climb progressively to the main Gennargentu ridge, where wide-open views stretch in every direction. The route crosses the high mountain area around Punta La Marmora before continuing along the ridges and eventually descending towards Genna Duío, where we spend our second night in the mountains.

  3. Along the Ridges to Arcu Correboi -

Leaving Genna Duío, we gradually move away from the main Gennargentu massif and follow the long mountain ridge through Punta ’e S’Abile and Monte Arbu. Open crests, rocky slopes and patches of woodland accompany us towards Arcu Correboi, the mountain pass that marks the end of the Grande Traversata del Gennargentu — and, for those continuing further, the gateway to the Grande Traversata del Supramonte.
