Tour Details

Description

Are you tempted to walk under the stars in the silvery light of the full moon? Set off in the afternoon, walk at dusk, then return at night, illuminated by the moon. The landscape transforms, shadows dance across the snow, and the silence of the mountain becomes almost palpable. It is a total change of scenery, a magical experience that few people have lived — an unforgettable evening of mystery, beauty and contemplation. The exact route will be chosen by your mountain leader, who analyses weather reports and the avalanche bulletin daily to select the safest paths. We meet at the bus stop "Schwarzsee, Campus" at 14:00 and the hike is scheduled to end no later than 21:00 — we may finish earlier, depending on the group's speed. A headlamp is required. Lunch is on your own. This tour is for hikers with appropriate snowshoeing experience and a good level of fitness: the technical difficulty is 2/5, but the physical difficulty is 4/5. The group is limited to a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 6 persons, so everyone benefits from personal attention. Because we travel on unsecured routes, an avalanche transceiver, probe and shovel kit is be required. I rent this equipment, so do not hesitate to ask. The definitive equipment list will be sent after registration. Finally, snow, weather and avalanche conditions may require changes to the itinerary a few days before departure, and despite all care taken to ensure everyone's safety, mountain activities involve a residual risk which the participant accepts.

Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is this snowshoe hike?

It's rated easy, with about 600 meters of elevation gain over forest paths and snow. No prior snowshoeing experience is required, but a reasonable level of fitness helps you enjoy it more.

Where do we meet for the hike?

The meeting point is Schwarzsee, Campus. Your guide will give you final details on timing when you book.

Do I need my own snowshoes?

Yes. You can also rent them in a nearby sport shop. You will also need an avalanche transceiver, a probe, and a shovel. I have two kits to rent.

What terrain will we cover?

The route runs through forest paths and snow-covered ground, with roughly 600 meters of elevation gain over the day. It's a single-day tour, so no overnight gear is needed.

Why do this hike under a full moon?

A full moon hike offers a different way to experience the Schwarzsee area, with snow-covered forest paths lit by natural moonlight instead of daylight. It's the same terrain and elevation gain as a standard route, just at a different hour.

What should I wear or bring?

Dress in warm layers suited to snow conditions, since you'll be out after dark. A headlamp is worth bringing as a backup even with the moonlight, and sturdy winter boots to enjoy the hike without cold feets.
