Complete the full Anillo del Vindio at Picos de Europa National Park in Spain. 5 days of technical limestone and forests trekking in Asturias and Leon.
The Anillo de Picos is a circular trekking route of Picos de Europa National Park through technical limestone terrain, deep gorges, and high mountain passes. This trip complete the original Anillo del Vindio of western massif between Asturias and Leon The route strings together mountain huts positioned at strategic points across the range. Terrain includes exposed scrambles on stable limestone, scree slopes locally called jous, rocky ridge traverses, and sustained climbs through alpine meadows and beech forest. Some sections require sure footing and comfort with exposure. I was born in Asturias and know these mountains well. I monitor weather closely and adjust daily plans when conditions require it.
Meet your guide in Cangues d'Onís and transfer to the trailhead. Orientation briefing covering route overview, safety protocols, and gear check.
Begin the Anillo loop crossing into the Western Massif. Ascend through beech forests onto rocky trails leading to alpine terrain. Navigate mountain passes with exposed sections requiring sure footing. Camp or overnight at mountain refuge of Vega de Ario with views across the limestone peaks.
Cross into the West Massif to Vegarredonda hut. Option to climb the Jultayu peak. Technical rocky sections with scrambling on stable limestone. Depending on the forecast we have two options of itinerary that we decide the day before.
Continue the Anillo route into the Eastern Massif to Vegabaño hut. Descend through forest paths after climbing to alpine elevations. Rocky trails wind through dramatic karst formations. Experience the quieter eastern sector of the range with fewer crowds.
Gradual descent through alpine meadows and mixed forest to Caín, in the heart of Picos gorge of Cares river.
Complete the circular route with a final ascent of canal de Trea and back to Lakes of Covadonga. Transfer to Cangues d'Onís. Debrief session reviewing the experience and answering any remaining questions about the Anillo del Vindio.
This is a challenging trek requiring strong physical fitness and stamina. You should be comfortable hiking 6-8 hours per day over rocky and uneven terrain with significant elevation changes. Daily distances range from 8 to 15 kilometers with elevation gains between 300 and 1,300 meters.
Previous multi-day trekking experience is strongly recommended. You should be comfortable with exposed scrambles on limestone, navigating scree slopes, and carrying a loaded backpack for consecutive days. No technical climbing skills are required, but you need solid mountain fitness and sure footing on rocky terrain.
Accommodation is in mountain refuges positioned across the route. Expect simple, shared facilities in remote settings with basic bunks and communal dining. These huts provide shelter and meals but not hotel-style comfort.
The trek begins and ends in Cangues d'Onís, the gateway town to Picos de Europa in Asturias. I will provide transportation details from there to the trailhead after booking.
Bring sturdy hiking boots with ankle support, layered clothing for variable mountain weather, rain gear, sun protection, headlamp, and trekking poles for scree and steep descents. I will send a detailed packing list after booking.
June through September offers the most reliable conditions when mountain passes are typically snow-free and refuges are fully staffed. Weather in the Picos changes quickly even in summer, so prepare for rain and temperature swings at altitude.
